In any type of communication, in any conversation, there are needs on both sides.

They may seem quite simple, on the surface: I need this project finished by tomorrow. I need you to clean your room. I need you to stop at the store after work and pick up a few things for dinner. I need you to help me with this. I need you to go with me to my parents’ anniversary party.

Underlying practical needs, however, there are more complex needs that we might not be aware of: I need you to keep your promises. I need you to respect my need for order.
