Yesterday, you were her best friend. When her boss chewed her out, you were there to pick up the pieces.  You rented a chick flick, grabbed a bucket of ice cream and consoled her.  You were her rescuer.  But, that was yesterday…

Today, you are her worst enemy. And, you never saw it coming.  When she asked you to meet her after work, you told her that you had to take care of some personal matters.  You weren’t there for her.  You were there for yourself.  She’s convinced that you don’t really care for her after all.  You are her perpetrator.

This is what it’s like to be the spouse, friend or loved one of a person with a victim mentality. The moment you begin to establish boundaries, which inevitably includes not rescuing her, you become her perpetrator.
