  This spring, Kelsang Wangmo, a German nun, became the first woman to earn a Geshe degree in Tibetan Buddhism. The Geshe title is conferred on nuns and monks who have completed an advanced course of study, which takes 16-20 years to complete. Until recently, nuns were not allowed to study for such degrees; indeed, before 1959, few Tibetan nuns were taught to read or write.  As a result, of the many thousands of great historical lamas in Tibet, less than 10 have been women.
